PROJECT 1
Form & Function
Form & Function
The objective of this project is to transform a bridge into a movable bridge, using concepts from household items. The complex movement involved in the functionality of these items will allow for an original concept for a bridge design.
The objective of this project is to transform a bridge into a movable bridge, using concepts from household items. The complex movement involved in the functionality of these items will allow for an original concept for a bridge design.
Our criteria include:
-
A 190' span of the bridge
-
No piles in the water below
-
Allowing a vessel of 30'x40' to pass through
-
Road is 10' above water
-
All membranes of bridge can span no longer than 20'
Baltimore Truss
Tombigee River Bridge
Steel Through Arch
Bridge of the Americas
Cantilever
The Quebec Bridge
Movable Objects
Can Opener
Hinge & Gears
Adjustable Wrench
Worm Screw Mechanism
Eyelash Curler
Double Hinge & Sliding Track
Conceptual Table
This table represents the possibilities between household items and different types of bridges. The given items will allow for these bridges to become movable, allowing a certain sized vessel to pass underneath.
Preliminary Design
This preliminary design applies various movable mechanism concepts from the Conceptual Table to a Baltimore Truss bridge.

Conceptual Applications
Gears
The turning of the gears causes turning of the attached worm screw.
Worm Screw
The large worm screw is powered by the gears, causing the smaller worm screw to be pushed upward.
Sliding Track
As the smaller worm screw elevates, the opposite side of the movable roadbed slides up a track.
