PROJECT 2
Contextual Fit
The objective of this project is to create an addition for an existing home, while maintaining the integrity of the design and continuing existing patterns.
The Existing Home
The Smith House was designed by Richard Meier in 1965. He placed significant emphasis on the placement of public and private spaces. The following includes 3d images of the existing home, floor plans, and existing patterns within the home.
The Addition
For my addition, I chose to use the sun and angles of sunlight as the Meta Idea, based on the client's lifestyles.

Narrative
The Smith family has requested our help in adding a new addition to their home. The Smith House, originally designed by Richard Meier, does not reflect the family’s modern day values. Designed in 1965, this outdated home fails to accommodate for the Smith family’s growing needs. The family of five has decided they need a family room as a more private setting to relax, an exercise room to encourage fitness, and an outdoor space for entertaining.
The parents feel that they deserve a more luxurious retreat for alone time. They wish to build a master suite, with an attached master bath. The couple requests the design of their home reflect the sun and sunlight, as they are often trapped at their indoor jobs all day. The wife, owner of a popular local restaurant, values the time she gets to spend with her children and husband during her busy life. The family loves spending time watching movies or new shows together. A family room would provide the perfect setting for such activities. The wife would prefer if the family room were a bit more enclosed, so there isn’t a glare on their new TV they wish to install. The Smith family includes three children, ages 22, 20, and 17. When the eldest are home from college, they enjoy hosting parties, but rarely find the appropriate space to do so. The parents have agreed to include a formal outdoor space for their children, and are excited to have an area for their own entertaining, showing off their beautiful view of the Long Island Sound.
Although various changes are required, the family greatly respects the design of the home, and wishes to keep the integrity. Any additions made, require a similar style to the existing home.
Hierarchy: Family Room
The family room can be utilized by all members of the family, and brings them closeness as the children are growing into their own lives.
Diagrams
The following diagrams use a circular space as a transition between the existing home and the addition. This space represents a joint, as a method of connection. It is first mapped out in 2d, then extruded onto the site plan in 3d.

System Extrusions
In order to maintain the existing patterns in the home, I have extruded the circulation, structural patterns, and public/private space system.
